- After a prolonged war, the mind flayers were defeated and their empire shattered.
- The shardminds go into hibernation.
- Twenty years ago, the first shardmind is seen since the mind flayer war.
- Since then, their numbers have slowly been increasing. Could their reemergence mean that the mind flayers' return is imminent?
Individual shardminds may or may not remember the war, and those that do remember it to varying degrees. They themselves are unaware of precisely why they have begun to wake up.
