Well since I've been thinking about it and the idea got stuck in my head I might as well write.  My idea was to be a Lizardman, but a slightly runty but smarter one. Of course a RLM isn't very useful so the other Lizard People think he's garbage, and the swamp is dangerous, full of things that want to eat him. One day he gets caught with a couple other LM by slavers and they become slave labor. The RLM doesn't care, he gets enough food, and can eat things they find outside, the work is not that hard, he's had much worse beatings , he doesn't understand why others complain about sleeping outside. The other LM think it's easy too, but they want to go back to the swamp. One day the RLM sees another slave pick up a thin broken piece of bone and keep it. He has no idea why, it's too small to be a weapon, you can't eat it, why take it, it has no use. Later while the guards are taking a break he sees the other slave while working sticking the piece of bone in the lock of his chains. He thinks that's odd, that bone is not a key, what can it do? Eventually though the bone works and the lock opens. The slave escapes and the RLM realizes two things, first the key does something in the lock to open it, but it doesn't have to be the key, and even if something is not useful now, it may be useful later.  He also realizes, his claws are thin and pointed like the bone. For five nights while everyone sleeps he sticks his claw in his lock and plays with it and he can feel different things and parts in the lock, then finally on the sixth day he manages to tweek the right point and the lock opens. He then goes and tries the same trick on the lock of the other LM and it works too. They escape and the other LM want to go back to the swamp, but he doesn't. Why go back where things try to kill him, and everyone thinks he's useless anyway. It's easier to live out here, he doesn't need other LP.

So eventually the RLM escapes with a group including a teenage girl. The others quickly peel off to return to their own goals, some offering to take the little girl with them, but each time she refuses and stays with the group. Eventually the last man is going to leave and he tells the girl to come with him, left alone with the RLM he will not take care of her and may eat her. The RLM doesn't deny this and infact states what the man says is true, although he never actually thought about eating her, if he was hungry enough he probably would. Still when he taking his leave the girl follows him instead of the man, causing him to curse and say she will die following him. The RLM doesn't care, people are free to do as they do, the girl may follow him, but like the man said, she is not his to take care of. Luckily she did not need him to take care of her, although occasionally she would ask questions about how to do things or find things, and it was always easy enough for him to tell her. When ever they passed a town or village the RLM would say, "here are your people, you can go to your people again." She would refuse though and when he asked why, she would always give the same answer. "I want to be alone, but I don't want to be alone." The RLM hated this answer because it made no sense, so eventually he stopped asking.
