Zanben was a tiefling mercenary on his way to Silverstone when he was caught and trapped by the Pyramid of Shadows. This his martial prowess kept him safe for some time, he was eventually petrified by a medusa. Many years later, he was freed by the Challengers of the Unspeakable and decided to stick with them in order to survive long enough to escape.
