Zaal was one of the bodyguards for Queen Napaka of Omu, serving her after the yuan-ti drove them from the palace. When Acererak came to Omu in the year 2959, he trapped both him and his companion Lukanu in a Mirror of Life-Trapping. Eleven years later they were freed by the Sutler Expedition, and agreed to join them in their quest to defeat Acererak in order to avenge the death of their queen.
