Gnarls Blackwood is a half-elf bard.

Gnarls was once a member of a traveling troupe of performers, until one fateful day when performing in Conniston in 2969 when a horde of aberrations suddenly attacked, flooding through the performance hall. Many fled, and many were killed within minutes, including his lover, a lute player. Gnarls was cornered in the back of the hall, but he found that his flute playing had a soothing effect on the horrors that surrounded him. As long as he kept playing, they wouldn't attack him. He played for countless hours as the horrors writhed around him, until they eventually departed. Since that day, Gnarls has lost all purpose in life, and he simply wanders from place to place, playing his flute to make enough silver to eat and put a roof over his head for the night. But he knows that there's a thin skin between reality and a universe of unknowable alien horrors. And he knows that they're listening, and if he plays the right melodies and pleases them, they'll reach through and affect the real world.
