Hillar Trell was born on Sabina 9, 2978 in a tavern, somewhere on the outskirts of Hargrave, during the worse winter storm of the season. It came as a surprise to his mother, Lady Bethel Trell, and father, Lord Jessip Trell, as Hillar wasn't supposed to enter the world for another month. Hillar hasn't stopped moving, since.

As soon as Hillar could crawl, he was exploring. He seemed to have a natural attraction to high places, much to the chagrin of Lady Bethel. She even tried tying Hillar to a family dog, only to discover Hillar and the dog up on top of a bookcase. By the time Hillar could walk, the family had given up and just acquired a Ring of Featherfall and a Wand of Locate Object.

Having somehow survived to age 5, Hillar was given over to the care of his oldest sister, Lissia who was ordered to watch over him while she went to school at the local Temple School of Yondalla. It was there where Hillar discovered the joys of high bell towers and the Ring of Featherfall. By age 10, he was past exploring the family holding of Pineholt and had moved into the northern range of the Thundering Mountains. And by age 12, he was a regular guest of several mountain Goliath towns. When asked where his brother was, Lissia stock answer was, "Who cares".

Having had enough of his wanderings, Lord Jessip sent Hillar to Hargrave to be taught at the exclusive College of Minstrals. Having lost access the vast outside that was called the Thundering Peaks, Hillar confined his wandering to the sprawling college buildings; discovering hidden passages, forbidden library shelves and secret rooms long thought lost. By age 16, even the unflappable Master Conductor, Fabrian Ethlairn had had enough, and proceeded to toss Hillar out. In an impromptu and improvised recital, Hillar proceeded to perform the entire Harg Runoja Cycle, the seven epic song poem detailing Harg Dragonslayers life and death, written and performed in old-draconian. When he finished 15 hours later, a moved, touched and thoroughly shocked, Conductor Ethlairn and staff graduated Hillar with honors; then kicked him out.

Terrified what an unsupervised 16 year old Hillar could do to the country, Lord Jessip buys an officer-cadet commission for Hillar in the Royal Army. To everyone's great surprise, including Hillar's, Hillar excels in his studies as a cadet of Swords. It is during this time when his fellow cadets learn of Hillar's birth and he picks up the nickname, Tavern, or Tav, which sticks. They also spend their free time searching for the tavern Tavern was born in. Unable to remember his birth, this search proves fruitless and highly successful.

At age 18, Tavern becomes a commissioned Sword Lieutenant and is assigned a platoon along the southern border near Pineholt. After a year, Tav is allowed to create and command a scout platoon. After several years, Tav and his platoon have been all over the country, and out of it, locating smuggling routes, tracking yeti migrations, joining Red Cloaks in capturing criminals, and watching giant enclaves.
