The Ebon Riders are an elite band of mercenaries, known for their extreme brutality in combat and their reputation to fight for the highest bidder; it is not unknown for them to change sides during a battle if their enemy pays sufficiently well. Their symbol is a black dragon on a crimson field.

The Ebon Riders are led by a bloodthirsty dwarf named Mauglurien the Black Dragon; it is said that he was exiled from his clan for long-forgotten crimes. Though he has formerly worshiped both Kord and Gruumsh, it is unknown who his current patron deity is; it is undoubtedly an evil one, however, and most rumors point to Orcus. His second in command is an eladrin lich named Ghovran Akti, a former member of the winter court of fey whose interest in the magics of frost and death borders on obsession.

The Ebon Riders were most recently seen attacking the Brightstone Heroes' outpost in the ruins of Terastra alongside a legion of demons and an avatar of Orcus himself. After the battle they quartered themselves within the ruins of a temple of Boccob, where they appear to be maintaining the portal to the Abyss being used to summon the demonic forces. Several more prominent members, including Ghovran Akti, have recently been slain by the Challengers of the Unspeakable - though as a lich, it is only a matter of time before the latter returns.
